Measure for Measure25th February 2016 - 19th March 2016
Demi-paradise Productions' present William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure at Lancaster Castle. The production is directed by Joyce Branagh. Costume and set design is by Olivia Dumonceau with musical direction by Jude Glendinning.
The 10-strong acting ensemble perform at Shire Hall, Lancaster Castle from Thursday 25 February to Saturday 19 March. There is a reduced-price 'family friendly night' on Monday 14 March.
This show is the company's contribution to the nationwide events marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. Our promenade production, for an audience of only 45 per performance, takes place in and around the Grade 1 listed criminal and civil courtrooms, barristers library & robing room, medieval Hadrian's Tower and ancient cells.
Fans old and new of the castle's resident professional theatre company can look forward to another intimate immersive experience of Shakespeare that Demi-paradise has provided them with biennially since 2000. Producer Stephen Tomlin explains: "We provide a unique showcase for the north-west's amazingly talented artists and creatives to explore this extraordinary venue and its dramatic possibilities. We are particularly delighted to be working with Joyce Branagh who enjoys a great reputation for her interpretation of comedy in its many and varied forms. Set in the 1950s, our exciting production will be highlighting the play's dangerous romance, wit, and consuming passion with a live and recorded sound track to match".
Demi-Paradise Productions of Shakespeare at Lancaster Castle have consistently played to critical and popular acclaim since the company started in 2000. We were runners up in 2008 for the Peter Brook/Equity Ensemble Prize, awarded annually by national theatre critics to companies producing outstanding work in venues with little or no public subsidy. In 2015 we were commissioned to perform a scene from Richard II for HM The Queen when she visited the castle. Demi-paradise also presents an annual celebration of Yuletide in words & music, Deck the Hall with Boughs of Holly, and every autumn in the run up to Halloween, readings of Ghostly Tales in the castle's low-lit rooms.
