On the landing to the right is the Senior Judge's Bedroom. For 200 years the Hanging Judges of Lancaster slept here. All the furniture in this room was made by Gillows of Lancaster.
The half tester bed is the centre piece of the room but particularly fine are the dressing table and tallboy both of which date from about 1812 and the large Mahogany wardrobe made in 1822.
Objects within the room
The following objects are located in this room:
Half Tester BedThis bed would have first been slept in by visiting judge's during the mid 19th century.
A half tester bed dating from c.1850, it is approximately four and a half feet long. In 1960 a visiting judge claimed that it was so short he had to sleep ’curled up or diagonally’ so the bed was replaced with a modern one and stored in the cellar.

CommodeThis commode/night table is the earliest piece known to have been made by Gillows of Lancaster specifically for the Judges' Lodgings in c.1797.
It has been made in the form of a chest of drawers so that it can stay in the room and blend in with the rest of the furniture. The top 2 drawers are hinged to the top and open to reveal a seat with padded sides. |

Mahogany WardrobeThis magnificent wardrobe was made by Gillows in 1822.
It was commissioned by Lord Manvers of Thoresby Hall, Nottinghamshire. He paid £45 for it! |
