Due to our ongoing programme of restoration works, access to various buildings within the Castle may be limited throughout the year. Nevertheless, the Duchy of Lancaster is determined to make the Castle as accessible and open to the public as possible.
In the past two years alone, the Castle has played host to the Lancaster Music Festival (main stage), A-Wing Club Nights, Light Up Lancaster spectacular, battle re-enactments, craft workshops, themed private dinners, weddings, classic car displays and silent movie (secret cinema) showings.
If you have any private hire requirements - whether for a photographic shoot, feature or documentary film-making, private dining event, seminar, workshop, conference, music concert or courtyard based performance space - please do not hesitate to contact us.
We will do what we can to accommodate you and your event, subject to the necessary health and safety, security and staffing standards being fully met.
Lancaster Castle is a striking and unique location for photo-shoots, music video, movie, drama and documentary filming. We are unique in offering two distinct environments in the same location.
One is a virtually untouched 20th Century English prison building complete with austere multi-storey walkways and heavy, bolted doors to authentic cells.
The other, of course, is a centuries old high-walled castle, complete with battlements, portcullis, hanging yards and an imposing twin-towered gatehouse.
There is also a pristine 18th Century wood panelled Crown Court room as well as the Shire Hall - a splendid ten-sided room, featuring a semi-circle of Gothic pillars and arches. Here is a splendid display of over 650 wall-hung shields bearing the arms of every English monarch from Richard The Lionheart onward, as well as all the Constables of Lancaster Castle and the High Sheriffs of Lancashire.**
We are happy to accommodate reconnaissance visits for film location researchers and then to discuss requirements and rates before agreeing a film project contract.
**The Shire Hall and Crown Court are still frequently used for judicial purposes so filming there is not always possible.
For more details about filming at Lancaster Castle, please call on 01524 848 525, or call 01524 64998 for filming in the Shire Hall.
The Castle is a listed building adjacent to a Scheduled Ancient Monument. We are therefore very careful to ensure that every event staged at the Castle is appropriate, will not damage the fabric of the building and will not cause unacceptable noise or nuisance to our neighbours.
We also have to consider our scheduled restoration works and where we are in the programme in terms of allowing safe and secure access to these historic buildings.
If you would like to hire parts of the Castle for a specific use, please fill in the Downloadable Enquiry Form below and email it to us. This will enable us to give you a speedy response as to whether or not we will be able to accommodate your event on the proposed dates - and what you need to do to complete your booking.

Over the next two years, the Duchy team will work with heritage architects, archaeological specialists, structural engineers and conservationists to restore further areas of the Castle to a weatherproof, watertight and structurally sound condition.
Work is currently underway on the roof of the Victorian clock-tower and rooms previously used as debtors' workshops. Scaffolding is expected to come down by October 2015.
