Shakespeare@thecastle

27th June 2017

Fans of the Bard will be thrice-blessed this summer, with a trio of Courtyard performances at Lancaster Castle.

Some of Shakespeare’s best loved plays will be given a contemporary and innovative twist by a series of nationally touring companies, each with its own distinct style and approach.

First up is the all-male, bicycle-powered production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Thursday 29thJune. The Handlebards return to Lancaster after last year’s hilarious rendition of The Taming of the Shrew and the heart-rending love story that is Romeo and Juliet. This year, the troupe is bringing its riotous and irreverent production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to venues across the country, leading audiences to support Puck’s pithy observation: ‘Lord, what fools these mortals be!’

The second Act belongs to Chaos Collective, the Lake District’s newest theatre company. It promises audiences ‘such stuff as dreams are made on‘ with a heady mix of ‘storytelling, physical theatre, live music and a spot of cross dressing’ in this touring production of The Tempest. Magic, mystery, monsters and mischief combine to create a ‘brave new world‘ here at Lancaster Castle on Thursday 8th July.

The third and final Act is performed by the Three Inch Fools, a five-man troupe of travelling players who travel the country with their unique vibrantly musical take on Shakespeare’s finest works. This year the Fools are applying their talents to Twelfth Night ??? naturally, given the opening line: ‘If music be the food of love, play on‘ And so they shall, in the Castle Courtyard on Thursday 8th August.

Audiences for any and all of this year’s Shakespeare in the Courtyard events are invited to bring a picnic hamper, lay down a blanket or bring their own folding chairs so that they can enjoy the show in comfort.

Performance times, ticket prices  and details of how to book are all available on the event pages of this website. Please search for individual events by date and by name.
